The 2nd Annual Chipping In for Veterans Golf Tournament

120 golfers braved chilly temperatures and occasional rain to play in the New England Center and Home for Veterans 2nd annual Chipping In for Veterans golf tournament. The Dedham Country and Polo Club hosted the event once again and provided a perfect backdrop for a day out on the course.

After golfers warmed up with the putting contest and on the driving range, James Hough, USN First Class Petty Officer (Retired), delivered a moving National Anthem, followed by a welcome from Chipping In for Veterans Committee Co-Chairs Dan Holland and Beirne Lovely, as well as NECHV President and CEO Andy McCawley.

The players kept up a steady pace throughout the day in order to beat the rain, but still had time to test their skills in contests along the course. Following the game, golfers gathered in the warmth of the Clubhouse terrace for a silent auction and cocktail hour.  James Fagan presided over the dinner as the Master of Ceremonies, introducing speakers and helping to raise funds for the programs and services offered to Veterans by the NECHV.

One of the highlights of the evening was a powerful speech given by former Green Beret Kevin Flike, who was celebrating his 33rd birthday that day. Mr. Flike spoke about sustaining serious injuries in Afghanistan and his difficult recovery. Against all odds, and with the support of many, he was able to “turn tragedy into triumph,” going on to graduate from Harvard and MIT with concurrent Master’s degrees and finding employment with Goldman Sachs. The full text of his speech is available here. We thank Mr. Flike for sharing his story with us, and joining us on his birthday.

With support from the day’s sponsors and golfers, the NECHV raised well over $112,000 for the programs and services for Veterans at the Center. We are immensely grateful to all who participated and helped make a rainy day shine brightly. We look forward to seeing you again next year out on the course!
